I am wondering if phpgrid works with DateTimePicker by XDSoft?
Or if there is any free solution to getting the calendar working for the grid and when adding a new item with a date field.
The free features list seem to support it but I cannot figure out where/how to get this working.

It should work with free. The integration process would be similar to tag-it integration.
1) Include js / css files
2) In dataInit setting of column, invoke that integration function of lib.
